The Marines have released the details surrounding a helicopter fire Thursday.
According to the information , at about 1:00 p.m. Thursday the CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter experienced an in-flight fire while on a routine training mission. The aircraft was able to make a safe landing at Imperial County Airport and the crew was able to evacuate from the helicopter with out injuries. The Imperial County Fire Department was able to quickly extinguish the flames from the rapidly spreading fire. The CH-53E is with the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron ( HMH ) 465 , Marine Aircraft Group 16 , 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing out of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
