An 83-year old woman from Encinitas suffered fatal injuries in a Friday morning accident.
According to the California Highway Patrol , the victim was a passenger in a car driven by her sister , 73-year old Leonila Aguilar from Yuma. The car was eastbound on Interstate 8 near In Ko Pah Road when it apparently drifted off the roadway to the left and then sharply veered to the right and into the open desert where it rolled over several times before coming to rest in a trench. The driver suffered serious injuries. One passenger , 70-year old Rosa Huante of Yuma , was in the front seat and suffered moderate injuries. The three ladies are sisters and were on their way from San Diego to Yuma when the accident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. Friday. Ms. Huante was transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center while Ms. Aguilar was flown to Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego by REACH Air.
The accident was not witnessed but was heard by runners who were on the west side of Interstate 8 and hurried to the accident scene in an attempt to help the victims. CHP Officer Javier Amezcua was in the area on his way to San Diego for training and responded to the accident. According to Officer Amezcua , Good Samaritans on the scene assisted him in extricating the victims for treatment without further injury. Amexcua said that he couldn't have removed the occupants of the vehicle without the help of the Good Samaritans.
The accident remains under investigation.
