California, Arizona and Nevada have agreed on a plan to save Colorado River water.

The framework for the plan was developed by the Lower Basin states to stabilize Colorado River system through 2028. According to the Imperial Irrigation District, the proposal builds on the Lower Basin states commitments of 1.25 million acre-feet in annual reductions, in addition to 250,000 acre-feet coordinated contribution from Mexico.  In total, the framework targets over 3.2 million acre-feet of water contributions to the system over the next two years. The plan is being presented to the federal government as part of the National Environmental Policy Act process. According to the IID, while they support the plan, it does not bind the district to any commitments and ultimately any participation by the district would require board authorization, federal partnership, and alignment with IID's long standing  priorities, including protection of it's senior water rights and environmental stewardship.
