Imperial Police are investigating an early Thursday morning accident that claimed the life of a pedestrian.

The accident occurred at 12:30 a.m. on State Route 86 just north of Aten Road. On arrival, officers located a man in a dirt ditch next to the road. Officers and Imperial County Fire Department personnel performed life-saving measures on the unresponsive man, identified as 41-year-old Ruben Camargo. The victim was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center and then flown to Hillcrest Medical Center in San Diego where he succumbed to his injuries. Preliminary investigation indicates that Camargo was southbound on Highway 86 when he was struck by a pick-up truck. The driver of the truck remained on scene and has been cooperating with investigators.
