(A sophisticated drug smuggling tunnel discovered)...San Diego Sector Border Patrol says the tunnel runs from Tijuana into the San Diego area.

The uncompleted tunnel extends more than 1, 000 feet into the United States. Agents first became aware of the tunnel back in April when it was actively under construction. The tunnel traveled beneath the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. The exit of the tunnel is in a commercial warehouse space. After entering the tunnel agents found electrical wiring, electric lights, ventilation systems and a track system designed to transport large quantities of contraband. Monday, Border Patrol, Homeland Security and Government of Mexico officials mapped out the tunnel. The Mexican officials discovered the entrance to the tunnel at a residence in the Nuevo Tijuana neighborhood. The entire tunnel measured 2,918 feet and ran about 50 feet underground. Inside the tunnel measured 42 inches in height and 28 inches in width. No arrests have been revealed.
