A seventeen-year-old high school student was found dead in Vista Del Mar, near Salton City.
The Imperial County Sheriff's Office received a call shortly after 8:00 p.m. Tuesday reporting that the 17-year-old had not returned home from school. The juvenile was last seen at 2:00 p.m. when he got off the school bus at Nile Road and Camino Road in Vista Del Mar. Salton City deputies responded to the call and took a missing persons report that was entered into the Missing Persons National Database. Deputies requested emergency pings on the juveniles phone. A search of the area identified by the pings was begun. The De Anza Search and Rescue Unit as well as an Aero Squadron response was initiated. In the daylight hours of Wednesday, deputies also deployed a drone to assist in the search. At about 8:14 a.m. Wednesday, the juvenile was located, unresponsive, in the desert near Service Road and Harbor Road in Vista Del Mar. The student was pronounced dead at the scene.
Imperial County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Unit, Scientific Investigations Unit and the Coroner's Office responded to the scene to conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. According to ICSO, this is an active and ongoing investigation. The Sheriff's Office said that, at this time, there is no threat to public safety regarding this incident.
