(The 4th of July is a Free Fishing Day)....The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says there are two free fish days.

In 2026 the Free Fishing Days are July 4th and September 5. They are perfect for learning the sport of fishing. On Free Fishing Days you can fish without a license. Keep in mind, all other fishing regulations, such as bag limits, size limits, gear restrictions, report card requirement, fishing hours and stream closures remain in effect. On the Free Fishing Days nobody has to purchase a fishing license.
