The passenger in a side-by-side was fatally injured in a Monday morning accident.
The accident occurred at about 10:50 a.m. Monday in the Imperial County Sand Dunes Buttercup area. According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2017 Polaris RZR Turbo Pro Star side-by-side went over a sand hill and smashed into the bottom of the bowl causing the vehicle to overturn. The driver, a 49-year-old man from Ephrata, Washington, was able to get out of the wreckage. The passenger, an 81-year-old man from Casa Grande, Arizona, was extricated from the wreck. Despite lifesaving efforts of U.S. Border Patrol agents and Imperial County Fire Department personnel, the man died. Both driver and passenger were wearing lap belts and shoulder harnesses. The accident remains under investigation.
