Legislation that allows the City of Imperial to buy the current California Highway Patrol (CHP) building has been signed by Governor Gavin Newsom.

The current CHP offices are on Highway 86 in Imperial. A brand new CHP-El Centro Headquarters on South 4th Street in El Centro is almost ready for occupancy. The City of Imperial wants to acquire the old headquarters for the Police Department. The legislation, SB 461, allows the State to pass the old property on to the City, exempt from California Environmental Quality Act rules and allows the property to be sold at below market value to enhance public safety. The new police station will allow Imperial to improve operating efficiency and security for the police department.
