A U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) guideline is now being enforced.

Secretary Sean Duffy said that updated procedures call for enhanced inspections to determine if commercial truck drivers can respond to English directions as well as understand traffic signs and message boards. The guidance is directed at truck and bus drivers engaged in interstate commerce. The policy from DOT is not new but the revised guidelines now consider a driver who can't read and speak English proficiently would be considered unfit for service. The Executive Order from President Donald Trump went into effect on June 25, 2025.
