A big rig caught fire and burned Monday afternoon.
The tractor-trailer was hauling alfalfa hay on State Route 78 near Midway Wells at about 3:00 p.m. when it caught fire. Both east and west bound lanes were blocked by the burning truck and trailer. Imperial County Fire was able to extinguish the blaze. The eastbound lanes were able to reopen after about 2 hours. The CHP provided traffic control as crews worked to clear the wreckage. The westbound lanes were reopened shortly after 8:00 p.m. after the debris was pushed off the roadway. The hay is expected to continue to smolder through the night.
